Genesis 2:4-2:25 – Observations

Observations

  • 2:4 – Tholedoth (generations) – Interesting use of generations for the heavens and the earth.
  • 2:4 – adonai eloheem (LORD God) – First usage of Lord God, previous usages were simply “God”.
  • 2:5 – Repetition – “before any plant of the field.”
  • 2:5 – Generations of creation before there was vegetation.
  • 2:5 – There was no rain or man
  • 2:6 – First water came from a mist.
  • 2:5-7 – Parallel of the two negatives immediately counteracted. No rain, no man. God sent the mist and God formed the man.
  • 2:7 – adam/adamah (man/dust) – wordplay connecting the two.
  • 2:7-2:8 – inclusio with ABCXC’B’A’ – Formed Man → From the dust → breathed life → living Being → planted a garden → Put in the Garden → Formed Man
  • 2:9 – Tree of life and tree of knowledge, small AXA’ structure.
  • 2:10 – River given emphasis, precedes the verb.
  • 2:11 – Pishon surrounds (guards?) Havilah’s gold?
  • 2:12 – Emphasis on the stones there. Gold, onyx, bdellium.
  • 2:13 – Gihon surrounded (guarded) Cush
  • 2:14 – Hiddekel went East. Fourth is Parah.
  • 2:15 – Consecutive verbs, to till it and to keep it.
  • 2:16 – acol thocayl (eating you may eat/eat freely) – Emphasis on eating
  • 2:17 – moth thamoth (dying you will die / surely die) – Emphasis on dying
  • 2:17 – lo (not) – Use of lo indicates a mandated prohibition, not a request to refrain.
  • 2:18 – ehseh lo (I will make for him) – Indicates God intent to provide
  • 2:18 – ezer cenegdo (helper opposite/in front of him) – Opposite and In front of indicates complimentary.
  • 2:19 – yazar (formed) – Used for man as well. God formed all life.
  • 2:19 – Small structure ABCXC’B’A’ centered on “to see what he called”. God formed → Man named. Naming indicates authority so God is giving man the authority over all living creatures.
  • 2:20 – The naming process was also a process for finding this complimentary helper.
  • 2:21 – Three verbs all indicating God’s action. Verb attributable to man is simply to sleep indicating his passiveness and even his lack of awareness of the situation.
  • 2:22 – Built and brought to the man is the same process that God used with the animals.
  • 2:23 – Man speaks for the first time.
  • 2:23 – Bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. Theme of flesh and bone indicates a kinship bond.
  • 2:23 – Structure ABXB’A’ – X centers on “this is called Woman”. Naming indicates authority. Surrounding BB’ emphasis on man’s bone and flesh.
  • 2:21-24 – Repeated usage of the verb to take and from his rib/side.
  • 2:24 – Man to leave father and mother. Cling to his wife. One flesh.  Indicating the kinship bond between man and wife is stronger than man and parents.
  • 2:25 – ..velo yithbashashu (naked…they were not ashamed) – Contrast between nakedness and shame.
