  • 4:18 – Enoch is the only object, all the following generations in this verse did the “begetting”

  • 4:18 – lamech
  • 4:19 – Relevance placed on the wives since both are named. Parallel to the Cain and Abel births?
  • 4:19 – adah (to adorn/ornament)
  • 4:19 – Zillah (her shadow)
  • 4:20 – jabal (watercourse, stream) – father of those who sit in tents and keep cattle. Father of nomads?
  • 4:21 – jubal (stream) – father of all who seized reed and flute. Father of musicians.
  • 4:21 – Parallel with Abel, referred as jabal’s brother.
  • 4:22 – Emphasis on Zillah since her name precedes the verb.
  • 4:22 – tubal-cain (a spear was borne along) – Not referred to as the father of anyone. Just his own craft is mentioned.
  • 4:22 – naamah (pleasant, graceful, gorgeous)– Sister is not given any trade or importance.
  • 4:23 – Synonymous Parallelism. Lamech repeats the woman should hear his voice and words.
  • 4:23 – Synthetic Parallelism. Second cola clarifies the man.
  • 4:23 – Man (the object) precedes the verb. Emphasis on the object, the man.
  • 4:24 – yuqam (to be avenged)
  • 4:25 – seth (seat, buttocks)
  • 4:25 – ABCC’B’A’ – Adam again knew his wife -> she bore a son -> she called his name seth -> God has given to me -> another seed-> instead of Havel because Cayin killed him.
  • 4:26 – enosh (man, mankind)
  • 4:26 – huhalal (they begun to) – Who is they?
